Release Sowore now, Amnesty tells FG

Global rights group, Amnesty International, has asked the regime of President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to immediately release Sahara Reporters’ publisher, Omoyele Sowore, and four other activists who were remanded in the Kuje Correctional Centre on Monday.

“Nigerian must authorities to immediately and unconditionally release activist Omoyele Sowore and other activists who were arrested by the police during a New Year’s Eve peaceful protest in Abuja,” @AmnestyNigeria tweeted on Tuesday.

The PUNCH had earlier reported that Sowore and the other activists were arrested on New Year’s Eve in Abuja for holding a protest against bad governance.

They were subsequently arraigned on three charges of criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, and attempting to incite others but the activists denied the charges.

Sowore, who was earlier declared a prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International in 2019, was detained for several months by the Buhari regime for allegedly calling for a revolution

He was denied bail several times and even re-arrested inside the Federal High Court. However, he was released after domestic and international pressure in December 2019.
