EFCC operatives
Pandemonium broke out on Wednesday at Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, after reports of operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission being present at the institution, triggering fear and unrest among students.
According to information gathered by PUNCH Online, the anti-graft operatives were seen patrolling areas around the campus, particularly as the development coincided with ongoing examinations.
Eyewitness accounts and videos circulating on social media showed an officer allegedly chasing a student, further heightening panic among the student population.
“We suddenly saw people running in different directions. Nobody really understood what was happening at first, but the presence of armed operatives created fear across the campus,” a student, who pleaded anonymity, said.
“It is wrong for such operations to take place when students are writing exams. It disrupted the entire atmosphere and left many of us shaken,” another student added.
Aggrieved by the development, a group of students reportedly staged a protest earlier in the day, expressing their dissatisfaction by burning tyres along parts of the Old Jebba Road leading to the institution.
During a visit to the school, our correspondent observed remnants of the protest, with ashes from burnt tyres still visible at the entrance, indicating the intensity of the demonstration.
