Gyan unveiled As UN Youth Ambassador

The United Nations has appointed retired Ghanaian professional footballer Asamoah Gyan as one of  its ambassadors. Gyan’s appointment was announced on Friday in a statement issued from Ghana Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Accra.

 

According to the statement, “He will work as a goodwill ambassador at the United Nations Youth Association in Ghana with the view of mentoring young sports men and women.”

 

“I’m delighted because I feel honored and privileged to work for this great organization in this capacity. I’m going to make good use of this opportunity and keep on being a worthy role model to our youths. I’m humbled. Big thank you to UN’’, the former Black Stars of Ghana captain said shortly after he was sworn in.

 

Gyan’s foundation  is reportedly said to have spent more than one million US dollars on charity across Ghana since its establishment in 2012 and has pumped money into more than 13 different charitable works  as well as cash donations for the less privileged people under the name: The Asamoah Gyan Foundation.

 

Just recently, Gyan who holds the record of Africa’s highest goal scorer in the FIFA World Cup, donated equipment, worth 20,000 US dollars to three health institutions.

 

In addition, the Foundation donated 200 bags of rice and noodles at the cost of 5,000 US dollars to victims of  flood and fire disaster.

In 2019, he personally presented a cheque of $15,000 to the Cardio Centre of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital as part of his benevolent activities.

The biggest single project, undertaken by the Foundation to date, is the construction of a $250,000 Astro Turf Pitch for Accra Academy School – the player’s alma mater.

 

The erstwhile Udinese and Sunderland striker may not be the richest footballer in Ghana but when it comes to philanthropic gestures, he is second to none. Gyan is currently the brand ambassador for “Save The Children ”campaign which helps kids who suffer from hunger and obesity.
