Kane surpasses Ronaldo’s Premier League goal record
After his goal at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, Harry Kane’s week got even better with a brace against Liverpool on Sunday seeing him surpass Cristiano Ronaldo’s Premier League goal haul.
During his years with Manchester United, Ronaldo established himself as one of the truly elite players in the world, in which time he scored 84 goals for the Red Devils.
With his double at Wembley on Sunday, the English forward’s tally in the Premier moved to 86, two goals better than that of his Portuguese rival.
Kane has been the English top flight’s golden boot winner for the past two seasons and looks set for a tilt at a third consecutive trophy with this incredible start to the 2017/18 season.
Understandably there have been comparisons with Real Madrid’s iconic forward although Mauricio Pochettino has looked to take the pressure of his talisman.
“Cristiano is one of the very best players,” he explained. “Kane is young and looking to improve all the time.
“He is competitive to the maximum level.”
It took the Portuguese star 196 Manchester United appearances to reach his milestone of 84 league goals but it has taken Kane just 125.
He is not done yet, at just 24 years old he is set to be a mainstay in the Spurs team for the next five years at least, provided he resists the overtures of Europe’s biggest clubs.
The Premier League’s ultimate goalscoring icon is Alan Shearer, the former Newcastle United great currently stands at the top of the division’s all-time scoring charts with 260 goals over the course of his career.
Wayne Rooney had been considered as the most likely to challenge that record, yet with the Everton captain having moved into midfield as his career has progressed, it is now down to Kane to find a way passed the target.
At the same age Shearer had only netted 47 Premier League goals, although by this point he had been forced to overcome an anterior cruciate ligament injury which undoubtedly stemmed his flow.
It isn’t just on the domestic scene where Kane has starred this term as he is the joint leading scorer in the Champions League too.
His record of 13 strikes in 12 matches in all competitions averages more than a goal per game so it seems unthinkable that he went the entirety of August without finding the net.
These exploits have led to people suggesting Kane could become the first English winner of the Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen in 2001, something that the forward himself isn’t thinking about.
“I think I still have a lot of work to do to be up there fighting for the Ballon d’Or,” he admitted.
