Man arraigned for hacking into Winners’ Chapel’s online bookstore

 

One Chimezie Chuta has been arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for allegedly hacking into the online bookstore of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, a.ka. Winners’ Chapel.

Chuta was arraigned on Wednesday before the Federal High Court in Lagos.

The EFCC, in the two charges filed against him, claimed that the accused hacked into the church’s online bookstore, named dominionstore.org, on March 8, 2016.

According to the anti-graft agency, Chuta allegedly hacked into the online bookstore so as to illegally confer the economic benefit on himself.

Chuta was also accused of creating a counterfeit version of the Winners’ Chapel’s online bookstore.

The prosecuting counsel for the EFCC, Ahmed Yerima, told the court that accused acted contrary to sections 14 and 16 of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention etc) Act. 2015, and is liable to be punished under the law.

When the charges were read to him, however, Chuta pleaded not guilty.

Justice Ayokunle Faji, who presided over the case, made an order that Chuta should be remanded in the prison custody.

The judge rejected the plea by the defence counsel, Mr. A. Osagie, that accused should rather be remanded in the custody of the EFCC.

He adjourned the case till February 26 and 27 next year for commencement of trial.

The judge, however, said the Osagie could bring a bail application for his client before the adjourned date. Punch
