THIS is certainly a strange time in the history of industrial relations practice in Nigeria as fully armed Policemen have stormed the National Secretariat of National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees, NUBIFIE, and arrested the three highest ranking officials of the Union on alleged instruction from Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Abuja.

Those arrested are the union President, Danjuma Musa, General Secretary, Sheirk Mohammed, and Deputy General Secretary, Okon Etim. At the time of this report, they have been taken to Federal Criminal Investigative Department, FCID,Alagbon close, Ikoyi. Though the reasons for their arrest are still hazy, it was gathered that the arrest was induced by those unhappy with the leadership of NUBIFIE affiliation to United Labour Congress of Nigeria, ULC.

It will be recalled that four months ago, the President was arrested and taken to Abuja, were he was allegedly asked to either resign as President of NUBIFIE or renounce the union’s affiliation with ULC. After about four days, he was released . Details later. Vanguard
