Speakership: Stakeholders want Buhari, APC to back South-East
Stakeholders from the South-East zone have called on President Muhammadu Buhari and the leadership of the All Progressives Congress to support the zone to produce the next Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Leaders of Presidential Support Committee and South-East Equity Alliance, at a press conference in Owerri, Imo State, said that equity and justice demanded that an APC member of the House of Representatives from the South-East should succeed Yakubu Dogara.
South-East Zonal Coordinator of Presidential Support Committee, Prince Chamberlain Adiaso, said the groups were supporting Emeka Nwajiuba, member-elect from Okigwe South Federal Constituency, Imo State, to emerge as the next Speaker.
Addressing journalists, Adiaso said, “It is an injustice for the APC to be working to deny South-East the opportunity to produce the next Speaker of the House of Representatives.
“Emeka Nwajiuba, being a detribalised Nigerian, should be considered for the position so that he can become a rallying point for the whole APC in the South-East geopolitical region.”
He pointed out that the people of the South-East assisted President Muhammad Buhari to get 25 per cent votes in the zone, noting that zoning the position of Speaker to them would be in line with Buhari’s promise of an inclusive government.
“Nwajiuba is best qualified and most suited for the position because of his legislative experience. As the Speaker, he would ensure the independence of the legislature and that harmonious relationship exists between the executive and judicial arms of government.
“We are calling on all well-meaning Nigerians to allow the people of South-East to produce the Speaker of the 9th Assembly,” Adiaso added.
Spokesperson for South-East Equity Alliance and former Speaker, Imo State House of Assembly, Nwoha Amaechi, said Nwajiuba’s experience in legislation would help him to perform very well as the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
He urged the APC national leadership to support the clamour for an Igbo person to emerge as the Speaker of the lower legislative chamber.
According to him, ceding the position of the Speaker of the House of Representatives to the South-East will help to bring an end to the pro-Biafra agitation in the zone. Punch
