Tragedy hits family as three sisters drown in Bauchi stream

Tragedy struck in Bauchi on Sunday when three minors reportedly drowned in a stream in Darazo Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

The minors who were said to be sisters left home to play, but were later discovered to have drowned at about 5.30 pm.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Bauchi State Command, Haruna Mohammed, a Superintendent of Police told journalists in a statement made available in Bauchi on Monday that the children were taken unconscious to the hospital after they were discovered.

He said they were however certified dead by a medical doctor.

“On the 21/5/2017 at about 8:pm, One Samaila Magaji, male, of Konkiel Town in Darazo LGA of Bauchi State reported at Darazo Divisional Police headquarters, that on the same day at about 5:30pm, the following children namely, Aisha Abdulmumin, female (7), Aisha Abdulmumin female (5) and Amina Abdulmumin, female (3) all of same address left home to play but were later discovered unconscious at a nearby stream,” Mohammed said.

“Police patrol team attached to Darazo division visited the scene and rushed them to General Hospital Darazo for medical attention. Victims were certified dead on arrival by a medical doctor.

“Corpses photographed and deposited at the mortuary for postmortem examination after which they would be released to relatives for burial according to Islamic rites.”

The PPRO who said the case is being investigated to ascertain the actual cause of the incident, advised parents and guardians to watch their children and wards.

He said: “Parents and guardians are strongly advised to caution their children to stay away from streams or rivers in order not to fall victims of drowning, especially during this period rainy season.”Punch
