Wahala! Funding crisis hits Adamawa, Insurance worry Edo
Adamawa United chairman Emmanuel Zira has blamed the poor funding for the team’s poor performance in the Nigeria National League.
Zira, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria in Yola on Thursday, said the side require a minimum of N8m per month to better their showing in the league.
The football chief said, “It is a known fact that there is poor funding of our club and that leads to the poor performance of our team in the NNL.
“Our sponsorship has been poor, so much that our players will arrive at match venues late due to a lack of funds.
“Ordinarily, we could have lost some of our matches, the matches we lost were due to poor logistics; poor preparations on the part of our management but all these were due to a lack of money.
“This problem of poor funding dates back to 2010 and it continues; in fact, I have incurred over N19m debt for sponsoring our team and the money has not been paid.”
However, Zira said the Adamawa State Governor Mohammed Bindow had promised to strengthen the club financially.
Adamawa United have played 16 matches in the NNL, winning seven and losing eight.
Meanwhile, Edo State Commissioner for Youths and Special Duties Mika Amanokha has told Bendel Insurance coach Roland Ewere and his players they must secure the NNL outfit promotion to the elite division at the end of the season.
According to NAN, Amanokha stated this at an interactive session with the players and coaching staff before their training session at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium on Thursday in Benin.
He expressed his concern over the team’s poor performances in recent matches.
“I really do not know what is happening but whatever it is, we need to deal with it and start winning matches,” the commissioner said.
“I can’t really understand why the team was winning matches when it had issues of welfare and other problems, but can’t win any match now that salaries, bonuses and better players have been settled.”
“It is for this reason that I’m here, not to talk to you but for us to interact to know what the problem is and for us to deal with it together.”
He added, “It is for this reason that am mandating you to ensure that you win your next three matches unfailingly.” Punch
