I recently stumbled on an engaging and very incisive biography, while moving stuffs to our new corporate head office in Surulere, Lagos.

Of course, the very interesting and revealing book was given to me by my late boss, Pastor Dimgba Igwe, while working as their editor at Entertainment Express and Sunday Express newspapers, respectively, between 2011 and 2014.

Titled Mike Adenuga: Africa’s Business Guru, the biography, which was equally written by my bosses and media giants, Mike Awoyinfa and Dimgba Igwe, chronicles in captivating details, the scintillating and stimulating story of Adenuga, one of Africa’s richest men and chairman of Globacom and Conoil.

Having read and thoroughly enjoyed the 682-page biography, which was first published in 2011, I have decided to share with you dear friends, some of the amazing and interesting things most Nigerians hitherto do not know about Mike Adenuga, fondly called The Guru.

1 His full name – Michael Adeniyi Agbolade Ishola Adenuga Jr.

2 The billionaire business man with a large heart hails from Ijebu Igbo in Ogun state, south west, Nigeria.

3 The founder and chairman of Globacom was born on April 29, 1953, at Adeoyo Hospital, Ibadan, Oyo State.

4 The Guru as he is fondly called is the last born in a family of five, comprising three daughters and two sons.

5 Adenuga’s primary education was at Ebenezer Primary School, Oke Ado, Ibadan.

6 The philanthropist-extraordinaire attended the famous Ibadan Grammar School for his secondary education.

7 He left Nigeria for USA in 1972, to read business administration at North Western Oklahoma State University, Alva.

8  Adenuga who is currently the fifth richest person in Africa, graduated from Pace University in New York, USA.

9 He returned home to Nigeria after a four-year sojourn in the US.

10 Workaholic Adenuga became a multimillionaire at the age of 26.

11 Adenuga, currently Nigeria’s second richest person, bought his first house at Regents Park, England, in 1981.

12 He used to be a major importer of foreign goods, including lace materials into Nigeria.

13 The chairman of Conoil Plc is the first Nigerian to strike oil in commercial quantity in 1991.

14 He founded Globacom, a national pride, which is Nigeria’s second largest telecom operator on August 29, 2003.

15 Unknown to many, Adenuga and the Awujale of Ijebu land, Oba Sikiru Adetona, are first cousins.

16.Adenuga’s late mother, Madam Juliana Oyindamola, was a very successful businesswoman. While his late father, Pa Michael Agbolade Adenuga Sr., was a revered educationist cum teacher.

17 Adenuga also known as The Bull, was arrested by the EFCC and later forced into exile during Obasanjo’s administration as Nigeria’s president.

18, He narrowly escaped death in 1982, when he was shot by armed robbers who invaded his then Ikeja, Lagos home.

19 The amiable billionaire, who likes to drive himself, was a gypsy taxi driver in New York, as a struggling undergraduate.

 

20 Adenuga also founded the defunct Devcom Bank and Equitorial Trust Bank, respectively.
