Members of the Abia State House of Assembly, on Tuesday, voted to impeach its Speaker,  Chinedum Orji, who is the son of former Governor Theodore Orji.

Although details of the impeachment remain sketchy, a ranking member of the House from Abia North Senatorial District, who preferred not to be named, confirmed the action of the lawmakers to our correspondent on Tuesday.

The impeachment was carried out by 18 out of 27 members of the Assembly who sat at an undisclosed location.

It was gathered that the motion for the impeachment of the Speaker was moved by the Peoples Democratic Party lawmaker representing Umuahia East, Chukwudi Apugo; while the PDP  lawmaker representing Umunneochi, Okey Igwe, seconded the motion.

The embattled Speaker, who represents Umuahia Central State Constituency in the Assembly, had lost his bid to go to the House of Representatives to represent Ikwuano/Umuahia federal constituency as he was defeated during the February 25 National Assembly election.

Orji, who is the son of former governor Theodore Orji, lost to the Labour Party candidate, Obi Aguocha.

Operatives of the Nigeria  Police Force have taken over the entrance gate of the Abia State House of Assembly at the time of filing this report. Punch
