Bauchi palliatives stampede: Command names philanthropist behind it as death toll hits eight

The Chairman of Abdulmumini Foundation and AYM Shafa Group of Companies, Abdulmumini Yakubu Maishanu, has condoled with the families of the victims of those who died in the stampede during the distribution of Zakat to the people in Bauchi State.

Shafa, who delegated a committee of trustees that visited the families of all deceased, said he is pained at the turn-out of events, especially the recorded deaths that had never happened before.

Speaking on behalf of the visitation committee, the chairman Zakat Distribution Committee, Professor Ahmad Muhammad Set’ly explained that the Zakat is a yearly event where the philanthropist distributes money to the poor and it has never recorded such unfortunate development.

According to him, “The event happened when there was a large turnout of crowd who struggled to enter into the distribution ground.

“They struggled in their numbers to the extent that the securities were not able to control them,” Set’ly explained to Arewa PUNCH.

Set’ly who also disclosed that he too was trapped in the melee and only survived by God’s grace, added, “I was lucky not to be among the injured because I was pressed to a gate and my clothes were torn when the stampede happened.”

While appreciating the Bauchi Police Command for being on top of the matter, Professor Ahmad confirmed that the number of deaths during the unfortunate event was eight, not the seven figure bandied around. Punch
