Charly Boy in big trouble for urging Nigerian youths to protest

Charly Boy

Charly Boy, the 73 year-old Nigerian singer, songwriter and actor took to Instagram Saturday and called on ‘exceptional’ Nigerian youths to revolt against Nigeria. The Peter Obi rabid supporter took his cue from the unrest in France, where there have been some days of riot following the killing of a 17 year-old boy by a policeman.

Charly Boy, whose real name is Charles Chukwuemeka Oputa, now wants the same reaction in Nigeria.

He did not state what should be the justification for the violence.

But it could be safely surmised that he is among the Peter Obi supporters still sulking over Obi’s thrashing in the election.

“This isn’t Syria, Iraq or Afghanistan. This is France where 9% of the population has brought down entire cities!”, he said in reference to the raging arson in parts of Paris, a video of which he shared.

“Karma from Africa? Am waiting on the exceptional Nigerian Youths to reject a system that let dem down. Una destiny dey una hand”.

In his earlier post before editing it, the musician called Nigeria a Criminal enterprise and urged Nigerian youths to bring it down.

However, most of the reactions to his post were one mighty rebuke, right on his Instagram page.

“Your kids shld lead the line…. You don’t have any positive impact in this country, what yu know how to do is preach hatred, war….this country wl move forward by God’s grace”, wrote Emmanuel Iyaniwura.

Jetima007 said: Please don’t be a reason why they destroy lives and livelihood in Nigeria sir, it is okay to rant but encouraging violence is the worse thing someone in your generation can be associated with, this battle is for us now, you can rest sir, thanks for your understanding, we will take over from here.

“Please sir. This is calling for violence, I don’t support this, I’m your big fan, but I condemned this post with everything in me”, wrote Abigail Nathaniel.

Another commenter Desanya Maestro served Charly Boy notice that he could be arrested by security agencies.

“With all due respect sir, security agencies can take this up against you as instigating youths to violence and course you all of us these things. Destruction has never done any good even outliving the generation who began it. You elders are the ones who say those who live in glass houses don’t throw stones. Let’s take things easy sir, respectfully commenting”.

“No need to wait for youth carry ur children go do am”, another writer said. The violence in France, which began in the Paris suburb of Nanterre snowballed into a bigger violence Friday.

President Emmanuel Macron postponed a state visit to Germany that was due to begin on Sunday due to the unrest, both countries said.

The interior ministry said on Twitter that 1,311 people had been arrested overnight, compared with 875 the previous night, although the violence was “lower in intensity”.

Nahel, a 17-year-old of Algerian and Moroccan descent, was shot by a police officer during a traffic stop on Tuesday in the Paris suburb of Nanterre, where buses were halted and the area quiet on a damp Saturday morning after more overnight rioting.

The shooting of the teenager, caught on video, has reignited longstanding complaints by poor and racially mixed urban communities of police violence and racism. Macron had denied there is systemic racism in French law enforcement agencies.

“If you have the wrong skin colour, the police are much more dangerous to you,” said a young man, who declined to be named, adding that he was a friend of Nahel’s.

SHOPS RANSACKED
Looters have ransacked dozens of shops and torched 2,000 vehicles since the start of the riots, which have spread to cities such as Marseille, Lyon, Toulouse, Strasbourg and Lille.

More than 200 police officers have been injured, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said, adding that the average age of those arrested was 17.PMNews
