Enugu LP replaces murdered candidate with brother

Ahead of the rescheduled National Assembly election in Enugu State, the Labour Party has  replaced its senatorial candidate for Enugu East Senatorial District,Oyibo Chukwu, who was assissinated, with his younger brother, Kelvin Chukwu.

The politician was  assassinated on February 22, about 72 hours to the February 25 presidential and National Assembly.

The attackers waylaid him along Amaechi-Agbani Road within the Enugu metropolis at about 7.20pm while he was returning from campaign.

His younger brother emerged the Labour Party senatorial candidate during a by-primary election held on Sunday in Enugu. Chukwu polled 223 votes to defeat three other rivals.

Those who contested the ticket with him were Mr Uchenna Ogbodo, Mr Chinedu Nneji and Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa. Announcing the results of primary in the presence of two Independent National Electoral Commission observers, the National Vice Chairman (South-East) of Labour Party, Chief Innocent Okeke, said  Chukwu scored 223 votes and his rivals did not score any vote.

Okeke, therefore, declared him as new flag-bearer of the Labour Party for Enugu East Senatorial District rescheduled for March 11.

Earlier, the Chairman, Labour Party in Enugu State, Chief Casmir Agbo, praised the 231 delegates drawn from the 77 wards in Enugu East Senatorial District, for their resilience and support.

Responding, Chukwu promised to fulfill all the dreams of his late brother and make the people of Enugu East Senatorial proud.

He added that the family had yet to recover from the pain of the tragic murder of his elder brother, who was shot and burnt alongside his personal aide.Punch
