Enugu: Two killed as gunmen attack police checkpoint

Gunmen suspected to be armed robbers have reportedly killed two policemen at a checkpoint in Agbogugu, along the Enugu-Ozalla-Port Harcourt Old Road in Enugu State.

The incident, which happened on Thursday evening, also resulted in the burning of two operational vehicles of the operatives.

The affected police officers, whose bodies had been deposited at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, were identified as the Divisional Crime Officer and another officer popularly known as ‘Big’.

According to eyewitnesses, the hoodlums, who arrived at the checkpoint in a tinted glass Toyota Camry, also set ablaze two vehicles, a patrol van and a Sienna that the police officers were using for the operation.

“It was a well-coordinated attack. The gunmen had little or no challenge after the attack and drove through Agbogugu town to escape,” one of the eyewitnesses said.

This incident is the latest in a series of attacks on police checkpoints and stations in Enugu North Senatorial District.

In the last month, several police officers have been killed in similar attacks.

Attempts to reach out to the Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, for a statement on the incident were unsuccessful as he did not respond to calls or text messages. Punch
