Group faults INEC Ogun governorship poll

Ladi and Dapo

A non-governmental organisation, Vanguard for Democracy and Good Governance has faulted the process that returned Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, elected for second term.

The group alleged that Independent National Electoral Commission goofed in declaring a winner in the Saturday’s governorship election in Ogun.

In a press statement on Tuesday by its spokesperson, Umaru Abubakar, the group argued that Abiodun ought not to have been declared a winner since the winning margin is only 13,912 while the total number of cancelled votes is put at 33,750.

The group insisted that the election was inconclusive citing the similar cases of Kebbi and Adamawa scenarios.

“We at Vanguard for Democracy and Good Governance are amazed at the sham and shambolic process leading to the declaration of Governor Dapo Abiodun as governor-elect in Ogun State by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

“To say we are stupefied is an understatement, going by the obvious disregard for the section of the Electoral Act 2022, which succinctly outlines how an election may be declared inconclusive.

“We recall that in the Ogun governorship election, the candidate of the All Progressive Congress polled 276,395 while the candidate of the People’s Democratic party polled 262,383.
