Help! Ailing widow, 56, seeks N1.2m for treatment

Bimbo Babarinde

A 56-year-old widow, Bimbo Babarinde, says chronic breast pain has deprived her of comfort in the past two years.

Babarinde, who lives in Imota, Ikorodu area of Lagos, lamented that her inability to raise money for treatment had worsened her condition by the day.

The mother of two told Sunday PUNCH that she started receiving treatment at a trado-medical centre but there was no improvement.

The widow said she later went to the Ikorodu General Hospital and was told to go for a breast examination which she did on July 1, 2020.

The result of the test signed by one Dr Imoudou Yakubu, indicates that her left breast is “solid” and has “cystic masses.”

The result equally shows everted nipples with “multiple solid, mixed solid and cystic tissues seen in the left breast.”

Babarinde explained that she was consequently referred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba.

She stated, “At LUTH, I was directed to the oncology department. A doctor asked me to go and do some tests. When I got to where I would do the tests, I was told my bill is N150,000 which I could not afford.

“I went back to the doctor and begged him to assist me but he insisted I must do the test.  He said I might need up to N1.2m for treatment. I have been struggling to get money to do the test without success, let alone the treatment cost.

“The pain is much and I have been told it could be breast cancer. I am appealing to people to assist me. I don’t have any means. The pain has kept me home for months now. I cannot work.”

Babarinde lamented that her ill-health had increased her burden as a widow, noting that she could not pay the school fees of her two children who are in university.

She said, “My husband died seven years ago. I have two children who are in university. I engage in petty trading to cater for them. The grace I have now is because ASUU (Academic Staff Union of Universities) is on strike. My children now do some jobs to raise their school fees.”
