A final year student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Chukwuemeka Akachi, has committed suicide after stating the reason for his action on Facebook.

Akachi, a native of Eha-Alumona in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State, was said to have battled dementia for over two months.

PUNCH Metro learnt that following an earlier threat to take his own life, two lecturers had been asked by the university to monitor and counsel him.

The English and Literary Studies student, however, carried out his threat by taking a poisonous substance.

A lecturer, who did not want his name in print, told our correspondent that it was the second time Akachi would be attempting suicide.

He said the victim had a long battle with dementia before he took his life.

PUNCH Metro observed that the deceased had gone on Facebook where he wrote a suicide note.

The budding poet wrote, “Forgive me. In case you are the one who found the body. I am really sorry. It had to be someone, you know. I have chosen Jo Nketaih’s poem as my suicide note: ‘They said you came looking for me. I did not drown; I was the water.’ Where do atheists go to when they die? Lol. Amen.”

In one of his previous posts, he said his mental health condition had affected his growth.

My mental health has been on life support for a while now. Thanks to those who call. Text. Visit. Speak to me. May we always remember. May we never forget. You may have added a few hours, months or days to my time here. But you know life support is expensive, right? Thanks for trying. Amen,” he stated.

The Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, Ebere Amaraizu, confirmed the incident, describing it as unfortunate.

Amaraizu, a Superintendent of Police, said the police had commenced investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
