Embattled Yoruba nation agitator Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho has been in the eye of the storm since he was ‘arrested’ by the operatives of Brigade criminelle (Criminal Brigade) on July 19 in Cotonou.

×The Nation reports before Igboho’s arrest, his Ibadan home was raided by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), who killed two of his aides and arrested 12 others during the operation.

The 48-year-old agitator, who narrowly escaped the bloody raid, was subsequently declared wanted for allegedly stockpiling arms to destabilise Nigeria under the pretext of Yoruba Nation.

Igboho, after going underground for 19 days, was finally arrested in neighbouring Cotonou, Benin Republic, while trying to travel to Germany.

He was arrested with his wife, Ropo but the Cour De’appal De Cotonou ordered the release of the wife based in Germany saying there were no allegations against her.

Since he was arrested, the legal battle to either extradite Igboho to Nigeria or hand him back his freedom has witnessed a series of dramatic twists and turns.

One of Igboho’s lawyers, Yomi Aliyu SAN, had argued that Igboho cannot be extradited to Nigeria because of the extradition treaty of 1984 between Togo, Nigeria, Ghana, and Republic of Benin.

But in the last judgment, the Cour De’appal De Cotonou ordered that Igboho should be kept in prison custody.

At the 13-hour hearing, the court ruled that Igboho be sent to pre-trial detention pending the conclusion of an investigation by the State.

According to one of his lawyers, quoted by BBC Yoruba, Igboho might be held there for three to four weeks pending the investigation. Nation
