Lagos residents lament presence of miscreants

Some residents of Ojo around the Lagos State University, Iyana Iba, have raised over the persistent presence of miscreants on the newly constructed pedestrian bridge in the areas.

The residents warned that the bridge was gradually being taken over by hoodlums, posing threat to both students and other residents in the area.

Saturday PUNCH gathered that homeless individuals, scavengers, and thugs have been sleeping and causing damage to the structure which has not yet been officially opened for use.

Speaking to our correspondent, a resident, Precious Chukwu, said the miscreants on the bridge were seeking shelter but staying there with the intent to wreak havoc.

She said she couldn’t use the bridge because it had become too dangerous.

“Seeing those people on the bridge won’t even allow you to pass there. You can’t even tell if they are mad. They look too dangerous and fearful.

“The government should protect passersby before the bridge is opened. As a woman, I doubt if I can pass there, because I would be scared of being raped,” Chukwu said.

Another resident, Yusuf Wole, urged the government to take swift action and clamp down on the miscreants.

“As time goes by, the place won’t be safe for students. There is a need to station marshals or security agencies here. These people are just there to cause problems. We don’t want them to turn this bridge to the one at Ojota, Berger and others where they steal and constitute nuisance.

“They should ensure the bridge is safe for all. This is a school environment and it should be protected by all means,” he stated.

Also speaking, another resident, Ismail Ojo, noted that the area was already dangerous, warning that if no action was taken, the bridge could become a haven for criminal activities.
