Mayweather set to fight McGregor again

Former three-time UFC title challenger Chael Sonnen thinks Floyd Mayweather’s retirement after the Conor McGregor fight was used to market his inevitable ‘comeback’.

Mayweather, 40, has recently teased of a potential fight in MMA but Sonnen believes the undefeated, 50-0 boxer is gearing up for another boxing match.

“Floyd Mayweather comes out and he… puts out like, a little video… of him getting into an MMA cage,” Sonnen said in a recent vlog, per BJPenn.com’s Drake Riggs. “We know he’s not doing MMA, there’s nothing about that but why would he be wanting to keep his name out there…? I know the answer, I just want to tell you guys. Floyd’s fightin’ again. He’s gonna box.

According to Sonnen, the current Bellator heavyweight Grand Prix contender has ‘some evidence’ to suggest Mayweather is preparing for a rematch with McGregor. However, that evidence seems to be limited to Floyd’s recent posts on social media and his quasi-retirement.

“But he’s fighting again, make no mistake, Floyd Mayweather is boxing again. He has no choice. The only thing more embelished than Floyd Mayweather’s pay-per-view numbers is Floyd Mayweather’s net worth.

“I really think he’s fighting Conor [McGregor]. I’m kind of out on a limb on that one but I have some evidence to support it… The one reason you always have to retire is you can’t have a comeback until you have a retirement so everything’s lined up for that. He’s seeking attention for some reason. I think it’s pretty obvious, he’s gonna box again and why not pick your opponent? I think we’re a lot more likely to see that fight than you people think.”

Mayweather TKO’d McGregor in the boxing ring last year but ‘The Notorious’ believes the boxing megastar will be haunted for the rest of his days he doesn’t step into the Octagon for a rematch.

If that fight doesn’t come to fruition, UFC lightweight champion McGregor will probably go on to face the winner of the upcoming title bout between Tony Feguson and Khabib Nurmagomedovat UFC 223, or perhaps face his nemesis Nate Diaz in a trilogy bout.

“I’m currently in negotiations to face my next opponent. We have many options. There’s the current interim lightweight champion [Tony Ferguson], there’s an undefeated Dagestani [Khabib Nurmagomedov], maybe a big Russian event. There’s obviously the Nate Diaz trilogy. Of course, the Mayweather fight is there.” Bloodyelbow
