Osimhen’s show of shame against Lookman
Victor Osimhen’s conduct during the Super Eagles’ 4-0 win over Mozambique has sparked wild reactions from Nigerians on social media.
The Super Eagles defeated Mozambique in the second round of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Monday.Osimhen scored a brace, and another two goals from Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams sent Nigeria into the quarter-final of the competition.
In between the perfect performance, a nasty episode left a sour taste. In the second half, Osimhen lost his head at Lookman for reasons yet to be identified. He required teammates’ help to calm the situation.
Still boiling, the Galatasaray striker signalled to the bench to be subbed off and was obliged. He was hooked, and Moses Simon was brought in.
After the final whistle, he left straight for the tunnel and refused to participate in the customary handshakes and prayer with his teammates.
He was also the first Nigerian player to head for the team bus.
Despite the brilliant victory, the striker’s behaviour has ignited concerns among Nigerians, especially those on social media.
Edwin Onyebolise, a sports journalist, said Osimhen must apologise to his teammates for his action. He added that the striker needs to understand that he is “not more passionate than his teammates”.
Yomi Kazeem, another X user and a former radio host, suggested a tougher punishment for Osimhen over the incident.
“On Osimhen’s behaviour: Sounds extreme, but the correct decision with Osimhen (if this can’t be resolved instantly in the dressing room) is to send him home,” he writes.
“Team > any player, including the best player.”
Theo Abu, another X user, said Osimhen has no “iota of grace and respect” for his Super Eagles teammates.
“You people need to stop referring to Osimhen’s ‘main character syndrome’ and disgusting behaviour as passion,” he writes.
“Passion is selflessly giving your all. Osimhen is not selfless, and he doesn’t have an iota of grace or respect for his teammates and fans.” Thecable
