Opinion: On the savage murder of Mr. Olawuyi by a lion – By ADEWALE ADEOYE

If anyone should die, it should not be through being devoured by a Lion.

It is a very painful and agonising way to die: You watch, the beast comes to you and then start with his devilish claws, then his fang, all at once and then he begins to devour you, as if taking his breakfast. You cry in agony but no one comes to help.

This was exactly what happened to Mr Olawuyi at the Obafemi Awolowo University, one of Nigeria’s most prestigious schools.

In Nigeria, human life is as precious as a coakraoch on the side walk. We pay little attention to human lives, we detest humanity, our passion for crass irresponsibility is unimaginable. We have educated but irresponsible people occupying important places.

Since the brutal mauling of this gentleman, have we considered some questions?

The Lion first attacked a woman. Why should that happen in the first place? What security measures were put in place to prevent such a gory scene?

It means the Lion could be loose and pounce on the street in that school.

Mr Olawuyi then rushed to assist the woman being eaten by the beast: What?

It means Obafemi Awolowo University authority did not provide tranquilliser for the zoo care giver. This is criminal conspiracy.

What an act of gross negligence!!! If Mr Olawuyi had a tranquilliser, the normal thing would have been to decapitate the animal, save his own life, and save the life of the woman.

That didn’t happen. Mr Olawuyi went to wrestle the beast with his hands. He was a good man,a kind man and a man of courage compelled by circumstances to act like a fool.

There is nowhere all over the world where this should happen except Nigeria and at OAU for the matter

Life goes on. No one is asking questions.

No one is tasking the OAU Vice Chancellor. No one is questioning the zoo authority. What a country of impunity.

To make matters worse, we have Osun State House of Assembly. Was there  a statement of condolences not to talk of calling for a probe?. They didnt visit the school. This man probably voted for one of them. The Governor is busy partying. Do they realise the message being sent to the world about this avoidable killing?

The Senator and the House of Rep representing OAU constituency have said nothing. They collect millions of Constituency Funds. A responsible lawmaker would have visited and offered to buy tranquillisers. That has not happened and  will probably not happen.

This means that what happened to Mr Olawuyi can happen again and again.

A country where people in authority have no conscience, no values, no affection. I have seen people walk their wild Alsatian dogs on the streets. I have seen little children walk giant and fierce dogs on the streets, little children struggling to drag the bigger beast alone. In many instances, these dogs get loose and attack people, children and women. We watch and life goes on.

This is the sad story of a country in perpetual witness to the most bizarre stories of preventable loss of human lives.

May Mr Olawuyi find peace in the world beyond.
