Opinion: The Next President of Nigeria – By SAM KARGBO

Barrister Sam Kargbo, SAN

If you want to know that politics is a living entity with a body, heart, mind and soul of its own, spend some time with northern political elites. Theirs has always been about betray-no-thoughts-or-emotions. They talk less and betray no preference or fears. They don’t wear their cults on their sleeves. They always believe that, “It is not he who danceth with who but he who taketh her home.” I recall that one *man* murmured at a dinner table that he didn’t know who would have the ticket of APC, but that none of Buhari’s choices would have it. When that played out at the end of the day, I fear fear.  In a word, the BRIDE OF THE NORTH will be the next President of Nigeria. The Southern trenches are impregnable. Amachi, Wike, Magnus Abe, Akpabio, Oshiomole, Ayade and Omo-Agege may improve the fortunes of APC in the South South, but the region is still likely to go the way of PDP. The South East is not likekly to miss the opportunity of making an emphatic point with Obi. Of course, the Southwest is APC. I agree that political measurements are not mathematical. But trends matter.  So, that  person the Northern elites trust and prefer will be the President. Atiku looks attractive, but BAT and Obidients can still warm their way. Moreover,  irrespective of what you may say about them, honour still inheres in northern politics. It is unlikely that the APC northern Governors will go back on their promise to shift power to the South. Northern elites also know their true friends. *Latter-day* posturing may not sway them.  Mind you, this proposition is not about the person who I want to be the President. We often answer the question of who will be with who we want to be.  So, be you BAT, ATICULATED or OBIDIENT, let your euphoria *not* discount or despise the numbers that will make your man President. When, two years to the 2015 election, I wrote that Jonathan would lose the election, I lost many of my friends. Some of my staff even left my office.
