AGAIN, hoodlums on Monday set ablaze a bus conveying tomatoes, vegetables and other foodstuffs to Enugu for allegedly violating the suspended every Monday sit-at-home.

This came as residents have continued to stay at home, defying even the orders of the Indigenous People of Biafra leaders, who have unsuccessfully tried to halt the action.

It was gathered that the vehicle, Ford brand, was set on fire by people believed to be enforcing the sit-at-home at Edem junction Ibeagwa, Nike in the Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State around 5:45 am.

The vehicle was reportedly coming from the Ugwogo end of the Opi/Enugu bypass when it was blocked and set ablaze.

Sympathisers were said to have put a call to the State Fire Service, prompting a quick response by the Ogui Road fire service station to the scene.

Though Enugu did not observe last Monday’s sit-at-home, a shootout was later that day reported at the Garki suburb of Enugu metropolis.

Sources told our correspondent that the shootout that might have forced residents to retreat and continue with the sit-at-home.

However, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, could not be reached at the time of filing this report.

Banks, schools opened in Owerri

Meanwhile, banks and schools opened in Owerri, the Imo State capital on Monday.

This was just as many students stayed away from schools as parents and guardians continued to express fear over the safety of their children and wards on Mondays.

But wood markets in the state failed to open as residents continue to express fear over their safety following the cancellation of the weekly sit-at-home by IPOB.

Our correspondent, who monitored situations around town, observed that there was improvement in terms of people who went about their businesses when compared to what happened last Monday.

For the first time since August 9, there was a traffic gridlock at the Government House roundabout in Owerri on Monday morning.” Punch
