Sit-at-home: Offices, businesses shut as residents desert Owerri

Owerri was a shadow of itself on Monday as the Imo State capital was totally deserted by residents and businesses in compliance with the sit-at-home order of the Indigenous People of Biafra.

Banks, shops, schools, Marketplaces, and other offices were shut in Owerri. While vehicles moved intermittently, the streets in the state capital were empty.

From Okigwe Road to Imo state University junction, Ikenegbu, Mbari, Wetheral, Douglas, Teltlow, Bank Road, Government house roundabout, Orlu road to MCC, the streets were literally abandoned.

Also, government house offices, especially, the Internally Generated Revenue office, situated on Owerri- Okigwe Road in Owerri, were deserted.

Peace Mass Transport Office at Orji Flyover, Imo Transport Company park at MMC road, and the other major parks at Egbu Road was also not functional on Monday.

Relief market, Umuonyeali and Naze word markets, Ekeukwu Owerri and other markets like Orji and Amakaohia and Akwuakuma markets were almost shut.

A resident who refused to disclose his identity said that the insecurity in the state was the cause of almost the total compliance with the sit-at-home order.

While he expressed concerns about the dwindling economy of the state, urged the State Government to stamp out insecurity in the state. Punch
