The US and Israel have attacked Iran, with President Donald Trump indicating the “massive and ongoing” military operation is aimed at overturning the government in Tehran. The attack included strikes on the Iranian supreme leader’s compound and killed several senior figures, according to an Israeli military official, though details remain limited.
- Massive retaliation: Iran launched an unprecedented wave of strikes at US military bases, Israel and targets in other countriesacross the Middle East, disrupting air travel and oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. An Iranian drone struck a high-end, densely populated neighborhood in Dubai.
- Global reaction:The United Arab Emirates called the conflict a “historic moment” in the Middle East, saying world leaders had failed to ensure the region’s stability. The leaders of some US allies expressed concern, while some Arab nations condemned Iran’s retaliation.
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Saturday that she’s continuing to monitor any potential threats toward the United States, after the strikes on Iran overnight.
“I am in direct coordination with our federal intelligence and law enforcement partners as we continue to closely monitor and thwart any potential threats to the homeland,” Noem said on X.
Given the potential for retaliation following the strikes in Iran, the United States Secret Service also issued a separate statement alerting the public of increased security measures for sites surrounding protectees.
“While we do not discuss our specific protective measures for operational security reasons, the public may notice an increased law enforcement and federal presence around U.S. Secret Service protected sites. Any temporary traffic or pedestrian impacts will be communicated by our local law enforcement partners,” USSS said in a statement. CNN
