FCT, Lagos, others to experience excessive rainfall – Report

Some parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Lagos, Kebbi, Ebonyi, Kaduna, Cross-River, Abia, and Akwa-Ibom states will experience above normal rainfall which may trigger flash floods, soil erosion, and displacement of communities, while disrupting terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.

A 2025 climate-related disaster preparedness and mitigation report by the National Emergency Management Agency and other stakeholders disclosed this on Saturday.

The report also noted that increased sediment transport and siltation could compromise the integrity of surface water structures, including dams, rivers, canals, and drainage systems, surpassing long-term average conditions.

On the security sector, it said the implications of the 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction were that national food reserves would be prone to attacks due to food scarcity, kidnapping for ransom will increase because of hunger and food security, while there would be negative vices relating to border crimes due to ensuing disaster.

“Flooding may result in challenging water environment and others, particularly in coastal states and hinder response operations. Flooding may affect the effectiveness and efficiency of carrying out tasks professionally by security agencies. Coordination among stakeholders becomes difficult particularly among security agencies during response operations,” it stated.

On preparedness and mitigative actions, NEMA and other stakeholders urged the security agencies to be ready to deploy security personnel to safeguard all endangered national food reserves during emergencies from January to December. Punch
