Ikorodu general hospital
A former photojournalist, Sam Adeko, has accused the management of Ikorodu General Hospital, Lagos State, of gross medical negligence and inhumane treatment of his wife, Adejoke.
According to him, the wife was admitted to the emergency ward of the hospital in April after sustaining an injury on her left foot.
Adeko said his wife was taken to the hospital after she fell into a ditch and injured one of her toes.
He alleged that a doctor at the hospital amputated his wife’s toe without consultation or consent from him, the children, or any member of the family.
“We were never consulted before they cut her toe. It was done without our knowledge or consent. This is unacceptable. It was three days after that the doctor brought documents for us to fill, which we refused.
“The doctors did not have the right to perform any procedure on her without the authorisation of her relatives. I even asked for the severed toe and why they performed the surgery without my approval, but the hospital has yet to give any reasonable justification, and neither has the severed toe been provided,” Adeko said.
He further alleged that her wife’s condition deteriorated after the procedure, as the toe began to decay, allegedly due to poor post-operative care and lack of timely medical intervention from the hospital staff.
In a distressing twist, he said one of his children, who stayed with wife, was at some point barred by hospital authorities from seeing her mum, while the doctors stopped attending to her wife’s wound.“The hospital not only failed to treat her properly but also prevented her child, who was assisting and providing emotional support, from accessing her. It was like she was being punished.
“All our protests and complaints fell on deaf ears, and the hospital stopped attending to my wife. It was at this point that the leg started deteriorating and we had no choice but to take her out of the hospital and seek treatment elsewhere,” he lamented.
