Help: Hypertensive patient solicits N11.2m for kidney transplant

A man, Mohammed Abdullahi, has appealed to well-meaning Nigerians for financial aid to enable him to lead a healthy life.

The 49-year-old man said he was diagnosed with kidney disease and told by his doctor at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Oyo State, where he is currently receiving treatment, that he would need N11.2 million for a kidney transplant.

According to Abdullahi, the health crisis started last year but he had been earlier diagnosed with hypertension which he had been treating, adding that he had spent a lot of money on it until the doctors diagnosed kidney disease which required kidney transplant.

The father of two kids said, “I was diagnosed with kidney disease and since then, I have spent a lot of money on it and the doctor in charge said the only solution to it was to have a kidney transplant which will cost a huge sum of money.

“I appeal for help to enable me to carry out the transplant. I need over N11.2m to do the transplant but I don’t have such money. I have spent a lot of money. I have been on treatment for hypertension which was earlier diagnosed but now it is kidney disease. I need people to please assist me. I don’t want to die young.”

A letter signed by a Consultant Nephrologist, Dr Y.R Raji, dated December 13, 2021 and sighted by our correspondent, indicated that Abdullahi is suffering from end stage kidney disease which is secondary to hypertension. The letter is titled, “To whom it may concern.’’

It read, “The above named patient is a known patient of nephrology unit, being managed as a case of end stage kidney disease secondary to hypertension.

“He was diagnosed with hypertension 12 years ago and he had been a patient of nephrology since 2018 when he was admitted for a hypertensive emergency.

“He was diagnosed with ESKD six months ago after careful clinical and laboratory evaluations. He is currently on thrice weekly maintenance haemodialysis. He has been counselled on the need for kidney transportation which is the best modality for treatment for ESKD.

“His current medications include, Nifedipine 40mg twice daily, Doxazocine 4mg twice daily, Tab Frucemide 100mg twice daily, Tab Febuxostat 40mg twice daily, oral haematinics, intravenous iron sucrose, subcutaneous , erythropoietin 4000 IU twice weekly, calcium carbonate 600mg twice daily and Alpha Calcitrio 0.5mg on alternate days.
